About Raheens
Raheens Wood is located approximately 3 miles west of Castlebar, on the Newport Road (the R311). Carpeted with bluebells in May, and criss-crossed by badger trails, it was until recently known only to locals. Although it was officially opened to the public as a ‘neighbourwood’ just last year in 2013, this natural amenity is anything but new. It is a remnant of ancient habitat, part of a once much larger forested landscape. This wood has by no means remained untouched by man, but rather it has become what it is today through long years of human interaction.
